Connecticut Newcomer

Hello everyone! As you can see from my post count, I'm new here. Long time reader, first time poster, I guess you can say. Anyway, down to business.

I've been interested in the Elise for a little while now - probably ever since I first saw Top Gear's Exige review a few years back. Well, I finished college quite a few months back and am seeking work, hence the need for a car. My desire lies with the 2005 Elise based on the price and simplicity versus newer models. Anyway, I have some [probably newbish] questions I thought I would throw out there.

First of all, I've read about lots of people who drive the Elise as everyday. I'm not sure whether I'll still be in Connecticut, of the Northeast for that matter, for work, but let's assume the worst. How much experience does anyone have with the Elise in the north? Is it reasonable to drive in the winter (sans snow)?

Second, being right out of college, I really don't have any experience with a real sports car. Yes, I can drive stick and have been a very good driver ever since I received my license at 16. However, I drive, you know, on normal roads with Hondas and Mazdas. Would the Elise be too much for me?

Thirdly, perhaps a bit premature, I'm looking for something around $30k, so preowned and, as I said above, probably 2005. Most of the Elises I see for sale seem to sell for around $40k, but isn't that what they retail for? And why are so many for sale with so little mileage? I figured a bare-bones car with a Toyota engine would run for quite some time.

Finally, I know most of you will tell me just to go test drive one and that will give me the answers I'm looking for. Let me tell you, I plan to - been waiting to for quite some time! Being from Connecticut, I expect to get a response from Robert@LotusofGreenwich

Anyway, I've gone on for far too long. Thanks in advance for any advice your fine community may offer.

Well now I feel awkward.................

I have several owners who drive their car year round. No, snow is not a good idea but the cold doesn't seem to bother the cars much. We had one car pass thru here about 2 months ago with 60k plus miles. It was a Ct. car.

Around town, the Elise drives like a Toyota. No overheating. No jumpy throttle or tough clutch. The car is very forgiving.

We have a 2005 Storm Titanium with 29k miles. It has Starshield, Touring and Black Leather. That we have listed for $31,900.00.

Welcome to the forum....
My first thought was ..."THE INSURANCE!!" How on earth will you be able to get yourself insured without selling your girlfriend's jewelry?
I'm a 56 year old with all the benefits of multiple policies, clean driving record, defensive driving discount and the like ... and it's still a significant figure. Having said that ... I wish you well in your quest and in your job search..... (Maybe you can get a job at Huntingridge..?)

You beat me to it! That was my next question. I know it's different for everyone, but what's a ballpark number on insurance? Would the Elise be comparable to a Porsche in this aspect?

And thanks for welcoming me!

About the same as a Corvette. Depends on how many cars you have and with whom you insure with.

Given the relative value of the car, I was priced much lower than Porsche or Corvette ins prices. Both of those have a premium car rate while the Lotus rate is more standard as it is not a $70K+ car.

My insurance is cheap!

I'm 42 years old. Perfect driving record. My '96 F250 4x4 is $70 a month and my 2006 Exige is $110 a month. Maxed out coverage on everything. State Farm.
BTW - this is about the same that my 930 was.
