flywheel

Does anyone know the weight of a stock flywheel in an Elise? Has anyone changed it for one with less weight?

response

I see there have been some 65 visits to this post but no reply. That tells me that most of the people who visit do not own an Elise or do not know much about these cars. From the research I have done, it seems that these cars have been designed to be so close to perfect that there is little to nothing that can be done to improve on them within their constraints. My only reservation is where I will be able to get mine serviced when I get it.

Sorry Len - can't help you on this question. You might want to check out the english SELOC forum for info since they've had the Elise much longer than us here on this side of the pond (although not the 111R any longer than we have). And, yes I do own an Elise - so there goes one of your theories.

Also you might want to check the EliseTalk forums for more info, they're a little more technical than what you might find here - no offence intended PureSportsCar.

Also, since it's the standard 2zz Toyota motor and standard transmission - I'm sure a little Googling will find you quite a bit of info on the flywheel and possible replacements/upgrades. Just got to do a little work on your own sometimes...

As far as service - depends on where you live. There are 43 dealers between the US and Canada now, and specialist like Sector 111 and Blackwatch Racing are coming on. So you shouldn't have any problems with service. And most of us on the forums are "do it yoursefers" to a certain extent - so ask a question and you'll usually get an opinion.

hi len
the stock flywheel as far as i know, is the same stock flywheel found in every other 2zz drivetrain....weighs about 12-14 pounds. lotus did NOT go through the engine and lighten things up....they worked the ecu mapping slightly.
as far as being "perfect" i dont know. the 2zz has been around awhile, never heard it called perfect b4.
the reason it is not a "tuners engine" is because of the high compression ratio theres not much more to squeeze out of it. its a 1.8l engine, keep in mind.
some people have replaced the flywheel on gts' and mr2's etc and have been happy with the lighter flywheel. i do not have first hand knowledge of a lighter flywheel in the elise as far as being able to tell the difference.
go to monkey wrench racing or something...they sell them.
ill probably do this mod later in spring as i intend to change out the stock clutch also.

Flywheel Change

Len,

Did you change out the stock flywheel? If so, would you recommend this?

Thank you,

Steve
