Just saw a yellow, silver, and black Elise

I just got back from a business trip to the UK. I didn’t have enough time to get to the Lotus factory or a dealer while they were open. I was able to visit the closest dealer, about 1 hour from where we were, one night after work. They had a yellow, silver, and black Elise. Here are my impressions:

1.The car looks as good in person as it does in the magazines.
2.Assuming the US yellow is the same as the current production UK yellow, it was definitely not school bus or taxi cab yellow. I would place it much closer to the Mica Yellow of the ‘92/’02 Miata or the yellow of the modern Corvette’s.
3.I was leaning towards BRG as a color, but after seeing the lighter colored cars I’m reconsidering. The silver and yellow looked sharp.
4.I’ll preference this by saying I have never liked black wheels…..The yellow Elise had the black wheels and I did not think it looked good. To each his own on this one.
5.There have been comments on the overall size of the car, but it didn’t look that small. For small look at the Smart (www.smart.com).
6.The engine hatch looked small which leads me to be believe the storage compartment, or at least access to the storage compartment, is very small and one thing I need to see up close.

I never saw a S2 on the road or in any of the car parks in the 5 days I was there. I have several European car magazines that I picked up with Elise 111R and Vauxhall VX220 articles so I’ll look in the ‘News and Reviews’ section to see if they are in there. One comment that came up in long term testing articles of two Vauxhalls is the heater/defroster was very inefficient. I assume the VX has the same heater system as the Elise since the controls look identical.

If you go I’d recommend renting a manual diesel vehicle if you don’t rent an Elise. The manuals are ½ the cost (30 vs. 60 pounds per day for a mid size 4 door) and the diesel is much more fuel efficient. We rented two vehicles one gasoline/automatic and the other manual/diesel. The diesel cost about 30 pounds ($50 US) for 3/4 of a tank of fuel while the gasoline vehicle cost about 40 something pounds to fill with approximately the same miles. It isn’t that hard to get used to driving on the other side of the road and the manual was also easy. I think it cost about 90 pounds per day ($160) to rent an Elise. National had a Mini Cooper S for 60 pounds per day.

deryl,

Sounds like a fun trip. The UK Yellow isn’t necessarily the same yellow as the US Elise. If it was an 111R or 135R than it was Saffron, if it was a standard 111 or a 111S it was probably Lightning yellow.

The latest reviews I have from the UK in the News section are the 111R article from Top Gear, 111R vs. Vauxhall VX220 in Autocar, and the US Elise article from EVO.

Elise 111R -Top Gear March 2004

Elise 111R vs Vauxhall VX220 –Autocar Feb 2004

US. Lotus Elise –EVO February 2004

If you’ve got any newer articles let me know, if you can scan them I’ll transcribe them and get them posted.

I was wondering how you got all the articles formatted so nicely…now I know. The UK Elise’s have their model designation on the side of the vehicle just in front of the door. Each Elise was a different model and I think the yellow one was a 135R.

The articles I have are:

‘Car’ – April 2004
•Elise 111R vs. VX 220 Turbo
•Long term update VX 220 Turbo

‘Evo’ – April 2004
•Elise 111R vs. VX 220 Turbo (different vehicles from above test)
•Long term update VX 220 Turbo (again a different vehicle from Car)
•‘The Greatest Driver’s Cars – Top 10 of the last 10 years – Which Is Best Of All?’ – Article testing their car of the year from the last 10 years. I think the Elise was a 1999 S1 version. Elise came in 9th and the article was 24 pages long so I don’t think this one is one worth transcribing.

I’m not back in the office until the end of the week, but I’ll e-mail you with information. Trip was fun right up until my flights were delayed 24 hours after the incident in Spain. That wouldn’t have been so bad, but by the time I got off the cancelled flight in London it was after 5 pm and I couldn’t get to the Lotus dealer before they closed.

Where is the VX built? There is quite a bit of discussion around production numbers, but does VX production affect US Elise production?

The VX’s demise is has a lot to do with the Elise coming to the US. Due to the fact that Lotus will no longer be producing the VX220 for GM Lotus has increased production capacity that allows them to produce cars for the US.

Why do you think the VX is being obsoleted? 'Evo' and 'Car' both have long term tests in process of the VX. According to Vauxhall's web page it available and was named '2003 performance car of the year'. All of that leads me to believe it is still in production for Europe.

The VX looks to be almost identical to the Elise except it is much uglier and has a different engine. The VX is also priced slightly lower than the Elise. My questions are where is this car made? Assuming Lotus makes the VX for Vauxhall, will production of the VX impact Elise production?

Maybe it's not quite official but I'm pretty sure I've heard the nail is in the coffin for the VX220

A quote from Autoweek:

"With the Opel Speedster/Vauxhall VX220 contract with GM coming to an end and no surety of that being renewed... "

I thought I had read that Lotus was originally attempting to secure the VX turbo from GM but they wouldn't allow it at the time because of its going into the Vauxhall. Lotus then went to Toyota and settled on the naturally aspirated one we are getting. Personally, I'm glad they did. Turbos are always problematic and expensive when
these problems arise.
