Those who like the 993's design will really enjoy the 997. And for those that don't, it's a disappointment. The 997 would have been my replacement for my Boxster had the Elise not come around and had Porsche not gone retro. Thank you Lotus!
I had read in some Porsche statement that the 997 was suppose to capture the hearts of those who wanted a 993 in the 90s but could not afford it at the time. Now that they're a bit older and supposedly wealthier, they have a chance to get their dream car to remind them "they've made it!"
I think the 996's design was compromised because people felt like it resembled the cheaper Boxster. Which leads to my gripe about Porsches today - too much image and with the exception of the GT3 and GT2, not enough emphasis on performance. If I wanted a luxury sports car, I'd buy a M, AMG, or Maserati - damn it! ;)
