Techron additive

Have 'repeatedly' heard from current auto mechanic Ron Ananian (who has a radio show called The Car Dr. here in the
NY-NJ area that goes nationwide) that adding this fuel additive (Techron by Chevron) really does prevent the build up of carbon deposits. Since the Chevron gasoline contains it, I was wondering if it might be the best fuel to use on a regular basis and if it isn't available to someone,
then using the additive every six months instead?

i read somewhere that 99% of fuel additives dont work if they did you would see alot of gasoline companies trying to add that additive in their fuel. But we dont see them doing that.

Chevron does include the additive in their gas. I don't have easy access to a gas station that offers it and have been thinking about using the additive.

I'm one of the first to pooh pooh aftermarket treatments, but.....

While I was on a business trip to the northwest I had a long conversation with a marine mechanic about Yamaha outboards. I have a Yamaha on my boat and typically ask the people who work on engines their opinions and what I can do to extend my engines life. One comment this mechanic made was to use a product called 'ring free' from Yamaha that has Techron in it. I'm not recommending you go buy this stuff since my outboard is a 2 stroke, but I thought it was an interesting coincidence and there might be something to this stuff....

I called Park Place while I was there and they said 2 more weeks before their demo would be there.

Chevron Techron:
30-50% hydrotreated petroleum distillates
10-25% Stoddard Solvent (similar to kerosene)
5-10% Naptha
1-5% Benzene
.1-.5% Xylene
I use it rarely. Don't lug an engine, go to
redline once in a while and I don't think you
need it. I base that on examination of the
internals of my BMW motorcyle engines
which I run Chevron gas through periodically.
If you do use it, do it just before an oil chage.

This 'Car Doctor' guy, Ron Ananian, who also hosts a DIY show on cable where he takes you 'step-by-step' through a total restoration of an Alfa convertible and a
Camaro, claims that he notices no carbon build-up on the engines of regular customers that use the Techron (twice a year) for a few years or more.

I have used it on my SpecMiata race cars, and it is recommended by name by Mazda.

Agree, run the motor near redline once and a while, and you will take care of carbon buildup.

Now that all gas stations use fiberglass tanks, we don't have to worry about deposits in the gas (or what MTBE does to our local ground water supply)...
