Fauth's impression on SCCA Elise classing

You haven’t driven the car yet, and you only have the specs on paper to evaluate the Elise, but given your experience in SOLO2 where would you think the Lotus Elise SHOULD BE classed for stock?

Given your experience where do you think it WILL BE classified for stock?

It's all going to come down to what size tires you can stuff under those front fenders. Rear grip is rarely an issue in Stock class autox (unless you're running a Viper/Vette or an S2000), so large enough rear tires will likely be able to fit just fine. If you can stuff a 225 Hoosier under that fender (highly unlikely), watch out! If that's the case, the Elise will be a terror in Super Stock...at least until we see what the C6 Vette will be like.

However, if, as some have speculated, you can only fit a 195 or so on the front, ultimate grip may be at a slight disadvantage. We also need to consider the availability of tires in an R-compound. If it's not possible to fit a nice-sized 205 on the front, there may not be any desirable options for front tires. That would be a shame, but something that I know several people are in the process of investigating.

If the car only fits 205s, I would think that A-Stock might be a decent fit (although the Elise would likely still dominate). Unfortunately, the Solo Events Board has (with a few notable exceptions...the Evo8 in ESP comes to mind) been pretty conservative with their classing lately (ask RX-8 owners about this). Given that, I can't see the Elise being initially classed anywhere south of Super Stock. However, even with narrower front tires, an Elise should be able to, on most courses, give the Vette Z06 a big run for its money.

Final note: given that the specs and options for the US Elise are not even yet finalized, take the above as a complete guess. In addition, unfortunately for those that would purchase an Elise without the sports suspension, they'll likely be classed in the same class as those that DID opt for the upgrade.

The Elise, as you know, will be pretty light in the front, at 38%. I'm wondering if the 195 up front will be just fine. Of course, there's the issue of someone making a DOT R tire in that size. Let's see - 38% of 2000lbs. divided by 2 = 380 lbs. on each front corner. That's not much weight.

Just read an article on the Porsche GT3 - same weight distribution as the Elise.

When do you expect that the SCCA will get the Elise classed? Any chance of getting it into the Nationals?

Malcolm:

Be prepared for GT2 or EP(full prep) in SCCA road racing as this is where they stick the mighty Elan and Seven respectively. SCCA is NOT know for being friendly to Lotus.

malc,

The Elise will probably (90% sure) be classed in time for nationals. I know the guys at Lotus America are working hard ad making this happen.

Problem is because the people who class the cars won't be able to see the cars in "action" before they classify the car it will more than likely get classed in a diffcult category. More likely than not for 2004 the Elise will be in ASP or SS.

For more indepth classing info check out:
Elise Classing

hope that helps

The Midwest Council of Sports Car Clubs has for the last few years, classed the Elise S1 in class X which is the vette/Firehawk/Viper class.
One particular Elise, holds it's own in that class so expect to get thrown off the porch and in with the big dogs.
The MCSCC also tends to be non-Seven-type-car friendly.
