Elise Autocross FAQ
Autocrossing Your Elise :: Overview
So you want to take your Elise out for a spin…
This will be an overview to one of the most fun, safest, cheapest forms of racing you can find. This sport is called autocross also known as SoloII.
SoloII is a driving experience usually setup in a large expanse on asphalt or concrete (parking lot, airfield, etc.). A course is designed and laid out with cones with each event having a different design. Generally course design limits speeds to 60-80 mph for most stock cars, once you get on course you’ll be amazed at how fast things happen and how much fun you’re having.
Drivers are allowed to walk the course before they run but there is no practice.
Depending on your local club you will usually receive 3-4 laps, keeping your best time for your final standing. Depending on course design there can be multiple cars on course at any one time, but there is never any “wheel to wheel” racing (hence the designation Solo), this minimizes the risk of car damage and injury.
Unlike many forms of motor sport the courses will be designed to equalize the playing field, not just to favor the fast high horse power cars but also the smaller more nimble ones.
SoloII also divides the cars into classes (you’re responsible for picking the right class, more on that later) so no mater what state of tune (from Stock to pure race car) your car will generally compete against cars of the same potential.
All you need to participate is:
- A roadworthy car - almost any non-SUV (read non-high center of gravity vehicle) will be fun
- A local chapter of the SCCA or other car club
- Desire to learn to become a better driver
